The summer of 07, ‘Altair’ and ‘Bluebird’

The famous 1931 Fife Yacht ‘Altair’ which, Duncan Walker originally worked on with its first restoration in 1987, had a ten month stay under-cover in Southampton for a major refit programme before heading for the Mediterranean.

Duncan continues the story “During her stay, work was carried out by our team in conjunction with others employed directly by the skipper. The ship-wrighting work, carried out by our shipwrights and engineers, consisted of replacing the stem, a major part of the inner stem and replacement of around twenty part frames. The air conditioning plant was entirely replaced and various improvements made to the air handling in all the cabins. The crew and associated tradesmen fitted a blackwater treatment plant. Her engineering systems were all upgraded and the electrical system was brought into the 21st Century. This was all in addition to the usual inspection work required by Lloyds Register for a six year survey.”

Duncan adds “Another important project for us during 2007 was building and fitting a substantial wheelhouse and other deck structures to the 34 metre classic motor yacht ‘Bluebird’. This yacht was commissioned during the summer and has since featured in Boat International.”
