Kelpie refit update
The rotten stern post was this week carefully removed from Kelpie and today a piece of Iroko for the new stern post was selected and cut out.
The new deck beams which will form the smaller cockpit are also now being fitted into the yacht. Repairs to the frames in the counter are now complete and patterns for new bronze strap floors are being made for casting.
Investigative work has shown that the stem is unfortunately rotten beyond reasonable repair. As with the stern post this has been caused by the original iron fastenings. A decision to replace the stem this winter has therefore been made. A template of the profile of the existing stem has been constructed and as the new stem will be laminated a jib is being made from this template.
All structural work will be completed by Fairlie in time to for Kelpie to take part in the Mediterranean regattas, looking better than ever.

Altair update
Following the extensive and extended Lloyds 6 year survey refit overviewed in the article below, Altair is due to be relaunched in July 2007.

Altair, full circle for Fairlie Restorations
An old saying states that ‘what goes around, comes around’, like most old maxims an accurate meaning is concealed by a general understanding and nodding of heads.

Lucky Girl
In 1910 the recently built first rule IRC 8 metre yacht was raffled off and the winner was a young girl. Hence the yacht’s name. In 1912 this yacht won Finland’s first sailing medal a bronze in the Olymics.

Moonbeam of Fife
Following her long stay in Hamble last year FR has worked on the yacht over the winter finishing of the last projects on board. The work on Moonbeam has considerably improved her aesthetics, both interior and on deck and out and sailing qualities.

Classic replicas on the horizon
With the diminishing opportunities of locating and restoring ‘original’ classic yachts, the emerging market for replica yachts is developing and gaining interest from individuals who would like to be part of the ever growing spectacle of sails and varnished brightwork at classic regattas wordwide.

If only... the unbuilt designs of William Fife
Fairlie was fortunate to acquire the entire archive of yacht designs produced by William Fife Jr in 1991. This priceless bundle of drawings stored in an old chest started a painstaking process to carefully store and archive the material in an environmentally controlled, purpose built storage office.
