The Sundowner is the first semi-production yacht to be built by Fairlie and will go into production this year. Owners can customize everything from interior arrangements to the decorative and exotic timber species used both on deck and below. For more information please get in touch.
The latest addition to the Fairlie Yachts fleet of designs is the Sundowner, a performance daysailer designed by Paul Spooner. An exercise in design and aesthetics, this example of ‘performance art’ was designed to a strict list of criteria which has created a yacht unlike any other on the market today.
The characteristics of the rig and hull make sailing simply a ‘1 sheet, 1 tiller’ operation. Her lifting keel reduces the draft to just 1.1m and is hydraulically operated from the helm position along with the mainsheet. At 3.7t displacement and 10m in length she is easily handled in a marina with her option of diesel or electric drive. She may be slightly heavier than her racing dayboat contemporaries, however this creates a more relaxed and comfortable sailing experience for her owner, who may wish to entertain less experienced guests.
The entire yacht, including the rig, has been carefully considered as a whole with regards to aesthetics and styling and she will be constructed by the same craftsmen who have built and restored many of the famous classics that adorn the harbours of the Mediterranean.
The hull is built from wood/epoxy laminates whilst the deck and superstructure are sculpted from finely detailed and polished hardwoods. Down below the detail of the hull structure is picked out as a feature, more like a piece of furniture than the performance sailing hull it really is. The simple cabin contains 4 berths and a head. On deck the cockpit space is maximised with a full length sun-lounging area aft of the helm position. The freestanding carbon mast is clad in a wood veneer and the wishbone is engineered from a wood/carbon sandwich construction.
